An Indian Summer!

Normal temperatures appear to be topsy turvy everywhere at the moment and the UK is no exception! Starting at a 10 degree hike on temperatures normal for this time of year we are thoroughly enjoying an ‘Indian’ summer.

So, what is this term, Indian summer? Here it is described as period of unseasonably dry, warm and calm weather which follows colder weather in late Autumn.

“The term Indian summer reached England in the 19th century, during the heyday of the British Raj in India. This lead to the mistaken belief that the term referred to the Indian subcontinent. In fact, the Indians in question were the Native Americans, and the term began use there in the late 18th century. The English already had names for the phenomenon - St. Luke’s Summer, St. Martin’s Summer or All-Hallown Summer, but these have now all but disappeared and, like the rest of the world, the term Indian summer has been used in the UK for at least a century.

Why Indian? Well, no one knows but, as is commonplace when no one knows, many people have guessed. Here are a few of the more commonly repeated guesses:

When European settlers first came across the phenomenon in America it became known as the Indian's Summer.
The haziness of the Indian Summer weather was caused by prairie fires deliberately set by Native American tribes.
It was the period when First Nations/Native American peoples harvested their crops.
The phenomenon was more common in what were then North American Indian territories.
It relates to the marine shipping trade in the Indian Ocean (this is highly dubious as it is entirely remote from the early US citations).
It originated from raids on European settlements by Indian war parties, which usually ended in autumn.
In a parallel with other 'Indian' terms it implied a belief in Indian falsity and untrustworthiness and that an Indian summer was an ersatz copy of the real thing.”

Anyway, since I am staying with my husband at our bolt hole in Devon we were told about a small cove that would warrant a visit and it is called Blackpool Sands. This is not to be confused with Blackpool in the north of England!

We have been told there are restaurant facilities and the crab salad is to die for! Oh joy, food again!!!!

Trouble and Strife…

In the UK you can claim to be a real cockney if you were born within the sound of Bow Bells.

“St Mary-le-Bow is the church of the ubiquitous ‘Cockney‘. Indeed to be an authentic cockney you must be born within the sound of ‘Bow Bells.’ The term ‘cockney, was originally applied to a small or misshapen egg, which was sometimes referred to as a cock's egg. The Oxford English Dictionary claims that the first use of the word as a reference to native Londoners was in 1521, when it was used by writer Whitinton. In 1617 John Minsheu wrote in his Ductor in Linguas that the word originated thus. 'A cockney or cockny, applied only to one born within the sound of Bow bell, that is in the City of London, a tearme coming first out of this tale. That a citizen's sonne riding with his father in the country, asked when he heard a horse neigh what the horse did; his father answered "neigh." Riding further he heard a cock crow, and said: "Does the cock neigh too?"' Whatever the origin of the term it was intended as a term of flattery for it was applied contemptuously by rural people to native Londoners who lived by their wits as opposed to by their muscle.”

Following on from that interesting fact Cockney folk used to have a language all of their own which was spoken in rhyme. For instance, trouble and strife meant wife. Apples and pears stood for stairs.

Rhyming slang phrases are derived from taking an expression which rhymes with a word and then using that expression instead of the word. For example the word "look" rhymes with "butcher's hook". In many cases the rhyming word is omitted - so you won't find too many Londoners having a "butcher's hook" at this site, but you might find a few having a "butcher's".

Cockney rhyming slang originated in the East End of London. Some slang expressions have escaped from London and are in popular use throughout the rest of Britain. For example "use your loaf" is an everyday phrase for the us in UK, but not too many people realise it is Cockney Rhyming Slang ("loaf of bread: head").

Further examples for your amusement and interest (the phrase is written first, with the word that is actually said aloud is on brackets and the translation comes last!)

Dickie dirt (dickie)= shirt
Almond rocks (almonds)= Socks
Whistle and flute( whistle)= suit
Jam Jar (Jam)= car
Mickey Mouse (Mickey)= house, can also be Cat and mouse
Dog and bone (Dog)=phone
Trouble and strife (trouble)= wife
China plate (china) = Mate/friend
Moby Dick (moby)= sick
Porky pie (porky/porkies)= lie
Ruby Murray (Ruby) Curry
Adam and Eve (Adam and Eve)= Believe
Cream crackered (crackered)= knackered/tired

That's just a few, so the next time someone uses any of these you might (just) be able to figure out what they're talking about!

Meanwhile, the main reason for this post was not to dwell on Cockney slang but try to move away from all the ‘trouble and strife’ in the world today! Most recently the terrible fate of those poor young people in Norway who were killed by a deranged madman. A sad reflection on today’s world when such acts can be perpetrated so easily. Imagine, someone dresses up as a policeman, a member of the public we have all been taught to respect; a keeper of the peace, law and order! Only to find this man dressed up as one and then going on a shooting rampage.

I guess the words Time Management should spring to mind but…. I say, better late than never! This post was supposed to have been posted yesterday, but hey ho!!!

At the moment, apart from the usual hectic day to day stuff, my dear daughter is very pregnant and due mid August. However, since her regular visit with the midwife a couple of days ago she has learnt that due to the position of her baby she might have to have a C section in a couple of weeks. So we now have frantic activity to get the last minute things in place for the exciting event. At least we have been told that a boy is due but I think colours are still being kept to a neutral shade.

I am a few days premature but the frenzy is in full swing as we head towards Friday, 29 April 2011. What is special about that particular Friday? You might well ask!!!! It is the day that we in the UK will celebrate a royal – NO! THE Royal wedding of the decade. That of Prince William and Kate Middleton or Catherine as she will be known henceforward.

Unfortunately, my wedding invitation got lost in the post so I will not be going to London. As a result, our company will not be providing the chair covers for the reception at Buckingham Palace! Hurmppph!

The last royal wedding ceremony I sat through was just thirty years ago. That was when Prince Charles and Diana were married at St Paul’s Cathedral. Here you can see them after the ceremony as they were about to reach their carriage which would take them to Buckingham Palace

In total contrast, at the time, I was living in Muscat, Oman in the Gulf.

I had been invited along with several other likeminded people to join in the festivities by meeting up in the Intercontinental Hotel in Muscat, in a specially laid out room which had a large TV monitor so that we could all follow the joyous occasion.

At the appropriate time waiters came along with glasses filled to the brim with sparkling, fizzy champagne and canapés. When the happy Royal couple came out on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to meet the populace, we all drank their good health.

This time we will be raising a glass or two of the bubbly stuff in celebration but, at our bolt hole. Needless to say, our TV will be on all day so that not a minute is missed! I so love a good wedding!!! I even bought some delicious snacks for eating during the day and in the evening we will have a ‘surf and turf’ BBQ. By the time I go to bed I shall be well and truly wedded out!!!

All that glitters is not ….. gold!

The original wording of this famous phrase was ‘all that glisters is not gold’ but over time we all adopted the word ‘glitters’ instead.

Shakespeare was the best known writer who made this phrase memorable in one of his plays entitled, Merchant of Venice. This play was said to be have been written in 1596 and included the following words.

MOROCCO:
O hell! what have we here?
A carrion Death, within whose empty eye
There is a written scroll! I'll read the writing.
All that glitters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told:
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold:
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.
Had you been as wise as bold,
Young in limbs, in judgment old,
Your answer had not been inscroll'd:
Fare you well; your suit is cold.

This poem form the play is about Portia who is a beautiful, virtuous, wealthy woman who is being wooed by numerous suitors. She is not free to decide on her own whom she will marry because her late father stipulated in his will that she must marry the man who correctly picks the one casket (out of three) that contains her picture. One casket is gold, another is silver, and the third is made of lead. The Prince of Morocco is one in a long line of suitors who tries to win Portia's hand, and he decides that it would demean Portia to have her picture in anything other than a gold casket, and so he chooses that one. As he unlocks it, he is dismayed to find a picture, not of Portia but of Death, with a message written in its hollow eye: "All that glisters is not gold; / Often have you heard that told. / Many a man his life hath sold / But my outside to behold. / Gilded tombs do worms enfold." With a grieving heart the Prince takes hasty leave of Portia, who is happy to see him go, saying, "A gentle riddance."

Several other famous writers earlier than Shakespeare have been known for quoting this sentiment such as the French theologian, Alain de Lille in the thirteenth century, who wrote "Do not hold everything gold that shines like gold". Others in time used similar wording but today we all speak and accept the word ‘glitters’ for ‘glisters’.

For those of you who are fans of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series of books by J R R Tolkein, you may remember this poem:

All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,

A light from the shadows shall spring;

Renewed shall be blade that was broken,

The crownless again shall be king.

The phrase, ‘all that glisters/glitters is not gold’, simply means that just because something may look valuable, desirable or attractive, it does not mean that it will be worth having once you discover its true nature.

Personally, I love gold and diamonds and rubies and sapphires and and and! Seriously, gold is an amazing metal whether it is shown as the real thing or pretend. When I was married yellow gold was in favour whilst nowadays fashions and likes have changed and it is white gold that is favoured instead.

Snow, what is all the fuss about?

I thought I would post a few pics of the snow we have been having. It has snowed steadily for 3 days but today is the first day when it has been dry. They do say there will be a slight thaw over the next couple of days. This will be good for the grocery shops who are now depleted of stock.

The roads have been wonderfully quiet! Sledges are the preferred mode of transport for little ones especially as the snow turns to ice.

When I offered to write a post for our blog I was scratching my head for a subject matter when …….

Yesterday, Clarence House (Prince Charles' residence and office) made an official announcement, Prince William and Kate Middleton had become engaged….. and …… William had given his mother’s engagement ring which was very special to him, and wanted to share it with his ‘someone’ very special. He said, "It is my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on the day and the excitement and the fact that we're going to spend the rest of our lives together." Aaaaah.

During these days of stories of hardship and austerity it is so wonderful to have good news and something lovely to look forward to! Well, I am a romantic at heart after all.

It is amazing how a story such as this spreads across the world to quickly! Perhaps it might have something to do with who William is and his family history? Would the media etc have the same interest otherwise? Mind you, it is a royal story, we all like to dream and imagine. So, let’s just wallow and then we can get on with our lives.

Autumn colours!

I know I have been absent for so long but I have been really busy! So, today I was able to take some time out to explore some public gardens nearby. We even managed a quick picnic snack!

These are some of the views we saw. OOops, nearly forgot to mention I have a new toy to play with! A new camera and I am loving it! L0ts to learn but I am very pleased so far. What do you think?

The Feeling of Joy!

I guess there has to be a story, or rather, THE story that is foremost in peoples’ minds that gives the participants and onlookers the most amazing feeling of joy. The story I am talking about is the successful rescue of 33 Chilean miners. A truly remarkable feat. The endurance of the miners having to survive below the surface for all that time as well as all the experts above ground who developed the means of rescuing the miners. In addition the hardships encountered by the families who ‘camped’ out near the mine opening and can now pack up and go home in the wonderful warm feeling of joy that their loved ones are once again safe.

The feeling of joy can conjure up many visions; all very different depending on the circumstances of the people who are en’joy’ing! Generally it is the feeling of real happiness about something unfolding. The joy of watching as each miner was successfully brought to the surface; the joy of watching a newborn entering our wide world; the joy of a feeling or warmth; joy as a feeling of success surrounds us; just plain joy at experiencing some of the amazing adventures nature can throw at us. The list simply goes on and is so diverse for each one of us.

Now…. I can feel immense joy and pride when I look through the items the BBEST team have produced. This team doesn’t need to be told how talented they are, each and everyone of them! Check out some of these diverse items which I hope will bring joy to the creator as well as the viewer.

Falling into Autumn – as Keat’s the poet wrote in ‘To Autumn’

‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core.’

Although sometimes a melancholy befalls some at this time of year when they see the passing of the summer season of brightness fade into the possibility of chill winds of winter looming on the horizon, for others they see this season as the most colourful, exciting, abundant and vivid time of the year!

Personally, I find this the most amazing time of year. The colours take your breath away and the abundance of the harvest promises tasty dishes for the long winter months ahead. Gone are the days when we wish it could be a little cooler. Now is the time to go for all those long lingering walks to discover nature’s palette, pick fruit off the hedgerows and see how the colours change in the light which in itself changes by the season.

Autumn is the time of year when nature offers us all her fruitful gifts to which we give thanks.

Whilst I lived in the Middle and Far East this is what I missed so much. The changing of the seasons, the renewed hope to look forward to the next adventure.

St George for England!!!!!

St. George's Day is on 23 April. It is England's national day.

Who was St George?

St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

Like England, every country within the United Kingdom has its own patron saint who in times of great peril is called upon to help save the country from its enemies. For instant, Wales has St David, St Patrick for Northern Ireland and St Andrew for Scotland.

Who was the real St George and what did he do to become England's patron saint?

St. George was born in Turkey sometime in the third century. At the age of seventeen he joined the Roman army and became renowned for his bravery and feats of arms. The most famous story of St. George is that he slew a Dragon somewhere in Libya. On one of his missions, St. George was sent to England. While in England he heard about the horrible persecutions of Christians in Rome. Returning to Rome, George pleaded for mercy for the Christians, but in the end was himself beheaded when he refused to renounce his faith. In 1222 AD, the Council of Oxford declared St. George as the Patron Saint of England (replacing Edward the Confessor).

St George is always depicted as a knight carrying a shield with a red cross (or a banner with a red cross), generally sitting upon a horse and always killing a dragon.

How does England celebrate St George's Day?

By tradition, 23 April is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower. However, unlike other countries, England does not celebrate it like Americans celebrate 4 July with fireworks. In fact, you are more likely to see big St Patrick parades in England celebrating Ireland's National Day, more than you would see any sign of St Georges Day being celebrated.

For most people in England St George's Day is just another ordinary working day.

Factoid!

Shakespeare was born on 23 April 1564 and he died on the same day in 1616.

Whilst not all of the following, strictly speaking, have much to do with St George and the Dragon you will have to admit they do have something to do with dragons!

I love the water and the moods it has as well as plant life that thrives at the water’s edge. Here is a scene to depict this simple stretch of water that laps against the reeds in the breeze.

Created with my trusty waxes and hot iron I blended the colours together on a box canvas measuring 30” x 20”.

Sometimes, you just don’t want to part with one of your own creations so perhaps I will re-create another but it will be slightly different!

I can hear it already, ‘Do you remember in 2009, or was it 2010, when we were snowed in/under/on?’ Kids who don’t experience it will be amazed at the photographs! Since, like so many others, I am getting tired of the cold of winter I thought I would turn my attentions to the garden. Amazingly, several of my plants are showing signs of life. Many have buds and my Mountain Ash (Rowan Tree) even has a couple of leaves starting to unfurl!

I am slowly returning after the Christmas/New Year celebrations when I was totally laid up with flu! Great!

Then as I was getting over that, I got another cold. Now, over all that and trying very hard to get on with everything again.

And so, my friends, I have listed this encaustic painting in my artfire shop entitled ‘An English Autumn Scene’.

Autumn always incorporates some of my favourite colours, so warm and bright as nature gives a final blast before she beds down for the cold winter.

You may remember that this was actually one of my entries into the First Annual Autumn Arts Painting Challenge and Competition on Facebook.

Hopefully, this will be the start of my muse coming to work again!

Food, Food, Glorious Food!

Well, we all know about that at this time of year! Although many of my US friends will have had their big meal on Thanksgiving, we in the UK will have ours at Christmas.

I grew up with the tradition of celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve since my parents where from ‘abroad’ but nowadays, since I settled in UK many years ago, we celebrate on Christmas Day. We start with the obligatory Buck’s Fizz, plenty of nibbles to keep the hunger at bay whilst we unwrap the pressies from under the tree and catch up on all the family gossip.

Before all the pleasantries comes all that preparation, angst, sorting, tidying to make way for more jumble, sorting or thinking up a new twist to the tradition menu, judging how many family will actually appear etc etc all for a few hours on the Day itself. We then sit looking at each other stupefied having eaten so much food that we can’t move and vow to ourselves, never again! So, what happens the next year? We all do it all over again!

This year I am planning, well I have just about planned my menu. We were supposed to be going to my daughter’s house but some of the family want to come here so she will be entertaining her in-laws for the first Christmas dinner! Panic!!!

So, what is on my menu? Well, we will be five adults with one very pregnant lady who will not be allowed to eat any shellfish. Her husband is really strict on that, our #son who has firm ideas on the subject. So, have you ever tried putting together a menu knowing that you should not use a certain food? Why does fish always appear everywhere? I have settled on making some homemade potato and leek soup to be served in a demitasse (small teacup!) whilst on the saucer will be placed a couple of small pieces of toasted baguette which has had olive oil and grained mustard spread on it. This will be rather nice to dip in the soup.

Next, comes la piece de la resistance! The TURKEY! This year I was going to serve just the crown of the bird since most of us like the white meat but for a change I am going to have a whole turkey. I noticed a lovely recipe whereby you lifted the breast skin to smear a mixture of mascarpone cheese mixed with friend pancetta, herbs and onions. Not only will this infuse the bland turkey meat with wonderful flavours but also keep the meat beautifully moist.

I shall make a gratin of Brussels sprouts, since that can be prepared in advance, along with carrots cooked in brandy, butternut squash pureed and roast potatoes in goose fat. The usual extras such as homemade cranberry sauce made with orange and port, bread sauce (might take a rain check on that one since hardly anyone really likes it!) and turkey gravy. Since I will have the whole turkey I will have the giblets to make up the gravy. Oh, did I mention the stuffing? Yes, that will be homemade with special sausage meat, grated apple, chopped up chestnuts and herbs.

Another tradition that I started years ago and know the kids have continued with their families is to have a small gift placed at their places at the table. Usually, something inexpensive but fun to open. This year I decided that I shall do a couple of lottery tickets each…. with the proviso that a commission is paid to us on any winnings … did I just say that?????

The last serving on our groaning dining table will be the desert. Always, everyone asks for Christmas pudding. Now, I used to make my own but since we all only want a spoonful I now buy in that commodity. In addition, I will serve a mango trifle and produce the small cheese board with grapes for those who still have the space to indulge.

After this feast, a quick clean up, chat, and off we all walk around the corner to my daughter’s house to continue the festivities and…. eating!

Did I tell you what she will be serving? Some of Mum’s soup starter, followed by turkey (cooked by mother in law), a ham and all the usual additions including my cranberry sauce! For desert she is going to try her hand at a delicious looking Irish Cream cheesecake followed with cheese and biscuits. And then, the other members of the family from around the corner descend!

Tatting – a dying art

I remember trying my hand at tatting. My, what a laborious skill. The trouble is these days we are all wanting instant satisfaction that often machine worked pieces are preferable to hand worked ones. If only, because of price!

According to Wikipedia, ‘Tatting with a shuttle is the earliest method of creating tatted lace.’

To make the lace, the tatter wraps the thread around one hand and manipulates the shuttle with the other hand. No tools other than the thread, the hands, and the shuttle are used. Some of the shuttles were made of bone and slipped easily through the loops. Later, a tatting needle was introduced whereby instead of winding the cotton around the shuttle the needle had to be threaded. Older designs, especially through the early 1900s, tend to use fine white or ivory thread (50 to 100 widths to the inch) and intricate designs. Newer designs from the 1920s and onward often use thicker thread in one or more colors. The best thread for tatting is a "hard" thread that does not untwist readily.

Well, I did try and still have the instruments for a rainy day! Meanwhile, I inherited some old, antique lace from my late mother. She lived into her 90s as did her mother. So, some of the antique lace which in its day must have sat on lady’s collars etc seems to sit in a box in a cupboard. As much as I can take out the pieces to ooh and aah over them, they always return to the storage in the cupboard. This seems such a shame! So, I am going to list some of these pieces in my Etsy shop and trust some buyer will come along who can fully appreciate the workmanship and beauty of them.

For instance, this tatted triangle is a fine example of the art of tatting and openwork.

It’s been so long!

I know, I know! It has been an age since I wrote on this blog. Well, I did have the best excuse in the world! My little girl got married at the end of August and it got a little frantic towards the end trying to bring together all those last minute details but eventually we did! Even though she was really unwell due to the stress of the wedding planning and the enormous stress at work we got through it and had the most wonderful day!

So, after all this time I decided to start selling some of my mother’s vintage items which often border on the antique. First off is this delightful Japanese paper and bamboo fan. Ideal for those days when you just want to move some cooler air around you but still stay ladylike!

Here you see the fan displayed open. The front shows a pretty bird looking over its shoulder at the flowers whilst the reverse is plain.

In fact when I pulled open the fan initially I did see some Japanese writing.

I promise not to leave it quite so long until I post again!

The Wedding

As many of you know, through my numerous postings on the team forum, the month of August is a very important month in our family this year. Our youngest, our daughter, is getting married later this month.

Panic has not quite set in yet! However, the days seem to be passing ever more quickly with only a short time to discuss and implement those last minute details. It is always the small things that seem to take the most energy and organising. Sometimes, you can’t help wondering if anyone would really notice whether the gold butterfly confetti was strewn on the tables or not? But, putting all these little details together does make a magical day even more magical!

A christening!

The term properly refers to the acceptance of the recipient of a christening, or Baptism, into the church of Christ. It means to "bring to Christ."

In this case, our latest grandson is due to be christened this weekend. As a Church of England tradition the actual ‘christening’ will often be added at the end of the normal Sunday service. So, hopefully we won’t have to wait too long as for other little ones it can be tiresome!

This ceremony does give the family the excuse to meet, join with friends and neighbours to enjoy and formally recognise the latest addition to the family. Hopefully, the weather will be kind to allow a barbeque to be held outdoors otherwise it will be a finger buffet style meal indoors. Either way, I am sure our grandson will be totally oblivious (he is only 6 months old) as it will be his nap time anyway!

Yogya Silver

Some of my more regular readers may remember that I spent much of my childhood, well my younger childhood, living on an island called Java in Indonesia. We used to live in Bandung but what I want to write about is Yoga silver which was worked in the town of Yogyakarta to the east of Bandung.

Silver was not really worked until the early twentieth century. In fact, the 1930’s. The art of silverwork or silversmiths had been dying out since it was the aristocracy who bought and used the local silverware. However, as they lost their power to the colonising nations they lost their wealth to pay for commissions and luxury goods. So, the native craftsmen lost their ready market and regular income. Silversmiths became a dying breed since youngsters showed no interest in continuing the craft.

In 1930, the wife of the Governor of Yogyakarta in central Java in the Dutch East Indies took an interest in the revival of the art of the silversmith industry. Her plan was similar to the one a decade earlier in Cambodia, where local artisans were encouraged to learn their historical aesthetics and to use the inspiration to create silver objects to cater for the European whims. Although this remarkable lady departed Java when her husband came to the end of his posting, the enthusiasm gained momentum. Local silversmiths now created the most beautiful artifacts for the local Dutch population as well as the American tourists.

After Indonesia gained its independence in 1949, the Yogya silver trade flourished and continued well into the 1960’s. Since virtually all the silverware was purchased by foreigners, few examples remain in Indonesia.

Certainly, my parents bought a lot of the silverware which over the years was given away to other family members or sold. Today, the ornate pieces would need constant cleaning and polishing which really would take up too much time and be so impractial since they were not dishwasher safe!

The silverware was part of my earlier ordinary day to day life. So much so that it was not until we moved to Europe that I realised one did not use ornate silverware for every day tasks!

We still have a few of these around the house to open our mail.

Several of these are gradually finding their way onto Ebay. In fact, I have one listed there at the moment!

The casing can be slid off the actual lighter.

I also remember my mother using a tea service similar to this one, even after we moved to Guernsey. It was only when friends came to visit that I fully realised that this was not the norm!

Can you imagine letting your little one feed themselves with this spoon?

The table would be laid with cutlery edged with the ‘typical’ Yogya designs. Even the salt and pepper condiment set would be placed on the table. We had one exactly like this!

So I think you get the idea of what life could be like.

Born with a silver spoon in the mouth, well not exactly but then it was a totally different world, altogether!

After a long absence… the Cuckoo!

I know I have been absent from this blog for a while but I have kept up my other blogs and thank you to those who read and follow me there!

Today with the advent of very warm weather for the UK I thought I would think about a bird that appears, although secretively, earlier in the year and then departs again at this time of year, the Cuckoo.

The Cuckoo is a dove-sized bird with blue grey upper parts, head and chest with dark barred white under parts. With their sleek body, long tail and pointed wings they are not unlike kestrels. Sexes are similar and the young are brown. They are summer visitors and well-known brood parasites, the females laying their eggs in the nests of other birds. When the Cuckoo nestling hatches, it instinctively pushes the other eggs and nestlings out of the nest and is tended by its ‘foster parents’ until fledging.

Caterpillars and other insects such as beetles and ants form the major part of the Cuckoo's diet. Many of the caterpillars are the hairy or brightly coloured poisonous ones, but their digestive system is specially adapted to cope with the hairs and toxins.

The female will also sometimes eat the eggs and nestlings of the host bird.

Cuckoos can be seen throughout UK but especially in the south and central parts of the country. The adults usually arrive in late March/April and depart in July/August with the young following about a month later, returning to central and southern Africa.

An old rhyme describes the Cuckoo's time in Britain:

In April I open my bill
In May I sing night and day
In June I change my tune
In July far far I fly
In August away I must

The familiar ‘cuckoo’ sound is made by the male. The female will tend to issue a rich, bubbling sound.

It seems one too many birds may have flown over the Cuckoo’s nest, as the Cuckoo is now a member of the UK’s red list which contains the birds who are considered close to extinction. This could be accounted for by other birds being in decline, the nests of which they used for their own young.

It would be interesting to hear how its American counterpart is faring?

Painted Lady

This week it was reported in the UK that we are being invaded by a beautiful butterfly called Painted Lady.

The Painted Lady is a long-distance migrant, which causes the most spectacular butterfly migrations observed in Britain and Ireland.

Each year, it spreads northwards from the desert fringes of North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, across mainland Europe and reaching Britain and Ireland. In some years it is an abundant butterfly, frequenting gardens and other flowery places in late summer. Well, this year, for whatever reason they have decided to come in their droves! We even had one visit us whilst we were sitting in our conservatory reading the Sunday papers. Luckily, we were able to release it back into our garden so that it could fly away to join its mates. Apparently, they thrive on the common Thistle plant which grows in abundance everywhere.

In honour of this beautiful migrant I thought I would search the Design Style Guide team for further examples of butterflies. Here is what I found!

The Ultimate Flower Show in UK

Some of you may have heard the name of the Chelsea Flower Show which is held annually at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in London. The show which is organised by the RHS or Royal Horticultural Society is one of the events to which many travel from all over the world.

Here up to date trends are exhibited featuring the latest and most desirable gardening products whilst creating an explosion of colour and scent. The immense pressure on the growers and exhibitors culminates in them displaying their plants and blooms at their peak. Growers appear from all parts of the United Kingdom so travel, storage conditions etc etc are crucial. The actual show lasts for 5 days every May and is held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea.

Show gardens are created by leading international landscape architects and garden designers. Imagine walking through these gardens and the inspiration they can give? New varieties flowers and plants are introduced at this show such as this Clematis Fleuri by Raymond Everison from Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

A new 'chameleon' heuchera bred in France. In spring the chartreuse-green foliage is striking, but as summer fades the foliage takes on a chocolate hue before turning to frosted verdigris in winter when the veining is most prominent.

Iris Coeur D’Or is a spectacular navy blue and pure white bi-colour as seen in this photograph.

Remember the comedy show on TV called Keeping Up Appearance featuring Mrs Bouquet? Well, another prominent character known by his stage name of Onslow had this beautiful An orange-striped sweet pea, christened 'Geoff Hughes' after him.

Lupins are always associated with a true old fashioned English Cottage Garden and this specimen is very striking! Named 'Thunder', a moody purple with a yellow fleck.

A soft-pink shrub that can also be used as a climber this Wedgewood Rose is described as having an "almost gossamer-like quality with a lovely fruity fragrance on the outer petals and a clove-like scent at the centre". This rose celebrates Wedgwood's 250th birthday.

A wonderfully unexpected present!

I had been out and on my return home found an official note from the Postman to say he had tried to deliver a package but it was too big to push through our letterbox and so I would have to make arrangements for a later delivery. This was Friday afternoon before our Bank Holiday weekend. I thought and thought about whether I had ordered something that I had forgotten about it or what on earth was I due to receive? I just drew a blank all the time and all through the weekend my mind kept coming back to what it was the Postman had not been able to deliver.

Through the internet I managed to arrange delivery but it wouldn’t be until the following Tuesday!!! The whole weekend my mind worked overtime!

Then Tuesday arrived and the door bell sounded. I ran down the stairs, opened the door and smiling acknowledged the Postman! Amongst the normal mail he passed to me a squarish looking package. Then I saw the name and address of the sender! The excitement juices were really working now!!!!

Rushing up to my workroom I picked up my scissors to carefully unwrap this well packaged parcel. The brown paper came away to offer a box that gave no clue to its contents. Carefully I opened the box which revealed a beautiful parcel in pink tissue paper tied up with a gold ribbon thread. My fingers were shaking I was so excited!!!!

Carefully I removed the tissue paper, ribbon and all was revealed! The most beautiful stained glass ACEO and stand. I was speechless!

I won’t go into the story as to why I was the incredibly lucky recipient of this ACEO but suffice to say it made me so happy! It was ‘Nonnie’ from a group called Boomers and Beyond Etsy Street Team (or BBEST for short) who had so thoughtfully sent me the ACEO and its very own stand. She is such a talented artist which I am sure you will agree when you have a look at her shop called ‘Nonnie’s Treasures’. And, above all a thoroughly lovely person too!

A Walk in the Park

The sun did shine this weekend and I couldn’t resist going for a walk in a park to see what nature could show me! I was not disappointed. There was an amazing tableau of colour presenting itself to us all as we strolled along the paths.

Apart from the breathtaking flora I had to say, ‘hallo’ to my friend the duck who was napping!

Then we strolled by a nearby lake and look what we found!!! Millions of tadpoles…

Even the water lilies are trying to open their petals.

VACATION!

As many of you know we have been pretty busy with builders and decorators so hubby and I decided to draw a line under all this and take a short break!

I will be gone for a week during which time my shops will be open but NO items will be dispatched until next week.

As promised…… our new kitchen!

TADA!!!! Yes, at last I am in the throws of the last cleaning up operation and can now reveal our kitchen. Some of the operations were painful, but hey! No pain - no gain, as they say.

Here is a picture to show you how it originally looked. This we inherited when we bought our house about 4 years ago. All the houses around here that were built by the same builder and at the same time all had a job lot of kitchens installed.

The built in oven was right next to the door into the kitchen. If ever the door had to be lowered to place dishes in it you either had to hold the kitchen door shut with your foot and balance or have the door wide open so that everyone could see what was happening. Great planning!

You can see the gas hob in the centre of the picture. All a wee bit cluttered!

In the next picture you can see from the kitchen into the utility area which houses the washing machine and tumble drier. See the bare light bulb? Oh, those are not real onions hanging on the wall!

Now we are starting to remove the appliances such as the washing machine. In this picture you can see the new boiler we had fitted which makes for a more efficient means of heating the water and the central heating system.

That gaping hole is where the oven used to be housed! It amazing to see how things look once they start to be dismantled.

As items were delivered they were stored in the garage. It did get quite cosy at one point!

Now things were starting to take shape. The tiles had been ripped off the wall leaving huge gaping holes in the plaster. As promised our man installed my new cooker and some cabinets. Although there were not tops on yet, the cooker was totally useable. The promise was that in two days I would have a ‘working’ kitchen and that is exactly what happened!

See, even the utility room was shaping up!

And now, the floor has been tiled. We decided to go with advise about using some of the floor tiles as a feature behind the range. This made it easier to hide the huge gaping hole in the plastering!

Over the windows we have placed bright red blinds which offsets the black, brown and chrome.

It might not look like much trouble, but believe me it is a luxury to now have the house/kitchen back for ourselves! The guys who worked on it were brilliant apart from the plasterer but we move on swiftly.

So, I guess I have no excuse to delay making those chocolate brownies!!! Brownies anyone???

Precious Quilts’ shop has been rather neglected for some time and I decided to remedy that today. You know how you search in your mind to find something that will be a little different or special that you think might sell? Well, of all the places I should be, it did as I was in the shower this morning.

Actually, a good friend of mine pushed me into this area… no, not the shower!!

She runs a group where all we do is swapping. Mostly fibre arts or mixed media quilties and the like. However, this month some of us opted for a change and voted on making a brooch. So, I said to myself, OK clever clogs! Now what are you going to make? I just didn’t have a clue until I went browsing on the internet, looked at the stash I have garnered over time like fabrics, lace etc. Then it came to me; in the shower! Boutonnières!

These could be created using different types of lace I have stashed away. Much of the lace I inherited from my late mother who was also a hoarder. She used to cut off any lace from blouses, underwear etc before throwing them away. And so, she managed to collect a wide variety into her collection. I didn’t really appreciate the lace until recently. It’s not until you compare some of the modern machined lace to the antique lace that you realise the world of difference between the two. Nothing wrong with modern lace but antique or vintage lace does have that ‘something’ about it.

I digress. I thought about the style I would use to make best use of the designs. Simplicity seemed the order of the day.

Here is a taster of what I have created for the swap group.

Two different antique lace designs were used with a vintage ecru button for the centre. A pin bar was sewn on the reverse.

Now there was no going back! I made another couple which I have listed in my Etsy shop, Precious Quilts.

Pricing was my next nightmare! Again, I researched the internet (what did we do before computers?) and came across all sorts of products. Some boutonnières were beautiful, some very pricey, some? Well, let’s just say, were not to my taste!

Anyway, back to my boutonnières. I have now listed them on Etsy.com and priced them, after chatting to my buddies, on a basis that I think might be fair. After all, they are all handmade, hand sewn.

Here is a boutonnières (don’t you love that word, I do!) that I created with antique lace loops which were sewn together with a mother of pearl look alike button on top. On the reverse I placed a bar pin to make it easier to pin to a lapel, sweater or the like.

The second one used ‘modern’ lace, is off white and gathered behind a vintage metal button. Again I placed a pin bar on the reverse.

Now to sit back and see what happens. Whatever the outcome, I have enjoyed making them. That to me is the most important aspect.

What the postman put through our letterbox today!

A couple of weeks ago I began a dialogue with someone I had met through one of the groups I belong to (BBEST) whose shop is called Clingingimages. Here you are able to purchase designer window clings with stained glass effects. This seller has many in her shop but also enjoys custom designing. This is exactly what I wanted.

We have a window half way up our stairs in which the previous occupants of the house had placed some clings. These over the years had faded and, although still attractive, I wanted something more akin to our own taste with a design with our stamp on, so to speak. After several communications to describe what I wanted, giving the dimensions etc I received an email with a selection of clings from which I could choose. How cool was that?

My husband and I decided which one was our favourite and placed the order. Without further ado the clings were produced to exactly the size I wanted and followed the description beautifully. So, when they arrived today I just couldn’t wait to open up the envelope.

There, beautifully packaged with full instructions on how to apply, remove and care for the clings, were our new clings! Straightaway, I cleaned the window panes so that they would be squeaky clean and allow me to place the clings carefully where I wanted them.

I so enjoyed working on the ideas for these clings and this was made all the more enjoyable an experience with the great communications prior to settling on the final version.

Now to stand back and admire!

The wonder of swaps!

Still on the subject of the ‘Spring’ swap the ACEO created under my OAW banner was created in the encaustic medium or painting in wax. Using my trusty travel iron and hot stylus for detail I imagined this stream running through some rocky crags with plants rearing their heads gingerly as Spring approached.

Firstly from Hemlock came this beauty. She even used rocks (pebbles!) from her creek. Very pretty!

I think this was a ‘first’ and hopefully, not the last.

Personally, I thought it was a wonderful way to introduce ACEOs to creators new to this format. To some ACEOs can be very daunting; to have to work in such a small piece of art can be challenging when you are not used to it. However, these two folk had never attempted this before and there were many who have realised what a fun and interesting size it is to work on!

A March ACEO swap!

A super team on Etsy.com that I belong to is called Boomers and Beyond or BBEST for short. You may have heard of us or, certainly, read about the group in this blog. Do check out the group blog link above to find out more about them.

Each month we have an event and for the month of March members were asked to join in and create an ACEO (an item measuring 2.5” x 3.5”) in any medium they wished but the theme was to be Spring. Quite a few of us signed up and as the ACEOs were created they were posted on this site for all to admire. The fun of this swap is that you are given the name and address to whom you are to send your ACEO but you have no idea whose ACEO you will receive in return. Of course, I did try to suggest that all ACEOs could easily be sent to me! Somehow I think that request fell on deaf ears, can’t think why? Anyway, as many as possible are always encouraged to join in the fun as it is such a brilliant way of communicating with each other and learning more about other artisans in the group.

Several members had never created anything so small or in this format but it just goes to show that if you decide to step outside of the box you will surprise and surpass yourself!

In my capacity of PQ I wracked my brains for quite a while before I came up with my Spring ACEO. I had some old buttons which I wanted to feature. Then came the idea of using the buttons as flowers with an embroidered sun. I even found a butterfly! See what you think?

OK, you will want to see what I received?

Today the postman stopped by with a package from Milton Keynes. That would have to mean something from Makeyourpresentsfelt! If you remember from the Flickr gallery pictures you might have spotted the chicken already. I had already mentioned/suggested that it come to me….. well, it did!

It is so cute! But, not only was I lucky enough to have won this ACEO but Chrissie also treated me to another using her felted expertise to create an ACEO entitled Spring Seedlings.

As if that wasn’t enough look at the pretty envelope that held them safe from the outer wrapping.

I would love to tell you who is due to receive mine but it would spoil the surprise. I do hope they like it!!!!!

It was….. Mother’s day yesterday

Well, better late than never! I should have posted about this yesterday but as you can imagine I was more involved with the family and being outdoors in the wonderful spring sunshine than wanting to spend time indoors on the computer!

I rose to a beautiful sunny spring morning. During the day the kids came round (my youngest baby is going to be 29 this year!) with lovely flowers/plants and cards. Aaaaaaah! I know it is a commercial thingy but, heck, it is nice to be spoilt any time, isn’t it?

Anyway, we had several jobs to do which were outstanding like putting up a new clothes line. Sad really. To think of the things that excite you as you get older!

Then, since the weather was being so kind we decided to go for a walk and I took these pictures. Yes, I know they are of the usual spring like flowers etc but it is a wonderful time of year!

I have this as my desktop background. I just love the way the daffodils are peeking out! If you click on the photo you will see the enlarged version.

Here we have a host of golden daffodils!

Walking round the corner we spotted this swan. There is usually a mate nearby but today this one was the only one in evidence.

Usually you would see plenty of green algae and moss on these rocks but I guess it was still a wee bit too cold.

To finish up I couldn’t resist taking this shot of the sun shimmering and twinkling on the water.

As the seasons change more colour will appear and we will be able shed our winter overcoats to enjoy the warm sunshine once again!

Who was Saint Patrick?

Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is well known for all sort of stories like the belief that he rid Ireland of all snakes. Totally untrue and merely a result of many years of folklore and handed down stories that were often exaggerated. For your information Ireland never had snakes but it is thought that the meaning came from the fact that St Patrick was to eradicate all pagan beliefs!

It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. (It is also believed that Patrick first began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.)

After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped. According to his writing, a voice which he believed to be God's, spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland.

To do so, Patrick walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was held, to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he experienced a second revelation; an angel in a dream telling him to return to Ireland as a missionary. Soon after, Patrick began religious training, a course of study that lasted more than fifteen years. After his ordination as a priest, he was sent to Ireland with a dual mission to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish.

His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to County Down. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.

Spring is in the air!

An Etsy team called Boomers and Beyond or BBEST for short, are having a new swap challenge this month is to create an ACEO with the theme entitled….. Spring!

I love sitting back to see what comes out of the woodwork. Truly inspirational pieces are being created in all manner of mediums. The excitement is always that each person who contributed is given a name of their swapee but they do not know who will be sending them an ACEO. To remind readers, an ACEO has only one rule. That is, it has to measure 3.5” x 2.5”. It can be created in any medium. You will note there are glass based ones, fabric, painted ones. The list is endless.

What did I create? Well, under the name of Precious Quilts I decided to create an ACEO depicting Spring in the form of the sun shining down on some pretty flowers made with cute little buttons I had in my stash. For the centres of the flowers I added some seed beads to enhance the image.

Oh yes! I love butterflies and have one in my avatar on Etsy so, of course, I had to include a pretty pink one to complete my picture composition!

Reason for being quiet…

Yes, I know I haven’t actually been posting lately but I do have a good excuse! Actually one of our boys has started an amazing adventure. He has driven from UK to the Costa Del Sol in Spain to do a dive master’s course. He has his own blog about how he began this journey after leaving Continental Airways after 14 years! Just follow this link http://davesscubasaga.blogspot.com/ where at the moment he is writing about his adventure but he hopes to add pictures as soon as he has his internet working.

The blog might be of special interest to those of you who are interested in diving the Padi way. Certainly, if you are not interested in diving I am sure you will find the blog amusing and informative.

So, you see I have been experiencing very mixed emotions of excitement, apprehension and a mother’s worry! Now that we have actually spoken during his journey through the marvels of Skype and by following the blog and, of course, his wife, minds are more restful and can again concentrate on a sort of normality!!!

So make sure your blog is worthy of all your visitors! Check it regularly, update and just refresh it on a regular basis.

Since spending some time on Entrecard I have come across some wonderful blogs. Entrecard will allow you to download a toolbar. This is so useful as it allows you to see how many credits you have, how many you have dropped, what category you are interested in etc.

So why not give it a go? I love it since it doesn’t cost me a penny and I can get exposure in places I had not every heard about!!

An exciting day

Yesterday was an exciting day for me…. my birthday! Yes, another one. They do seem to come round more quickly each year, don’t they?

It was a grey and dull day but that didn’t detract from my day! As a treat we were to go to London to see a show called the Jersey Boys which I had long wanted to see.

We got ready to go out and had decided to take the bus to the rail station. Waiting at the bus stop with about 8 minutes to go we noticed an Interlink van driving out of our road. Hubby realised that a parcel he had been waiting for might have been attempting a delivery. As soon as the van came towards us at the bus stop he flagged it down. The driver expecting a hold up by a couple of wrinklies looked quizzically as my husband explained. Yes, the package was onboard so it was signed for and duly handed over. Right! A quick sprint to the house and I’ll be back, according to Hubby. There was to be just enough time before the arrival of the bus. I waited thinking that if I could just see my husband coming out of our road I would be able to delay the bus long enough for him to catch up. The clock ticked, and ticked. At last! Around the corner he rushed just in time to arrive at the bus stop simultaneously as the bus! Unbeknown to me as he was locking the front door a ParcelPost van drew up wanting to deliver a box of flowers for me! Quickly they were accepted, placed in the hall, door locked and then the rush to return to me at the bus stop.

Once at the station we bought our rail tickets to travel by train to Victoria from where we were to continue our journey to Leicester Square by Underground. Since we were early we decided to have a drink and a spot of lunch. How civilized!

Now the time was coming to enter the Prince Edward Theatre. We were to be sitting in the grand circle. Settling down we waiting in anticipation for the lights to dim and the production to begin. By the way, we sat in two of the red seat pictured in the picture on the right!

The musical show of Jersey Boys is based on the electrifying true life story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. With spectacular performances of their hits, follow the rollercoaster journey of a group of working class boys from the streets of New Jersey, who worked their way to the heights of international pop stardom. The show featured many memorable hits, including: Beggin’, Oh What a night, Can’t take my eyes off you, Sherry, Walk like a man, Bye bye baby and Baby, big girls don’t cry to name but a small selection of songs preformed. Actually, one of the scariest thoughts was that here we were clapping and singing our hearts out to music from over 40, yes, 40 years ago!!! Gulp! It was especially hard when I looked around me at some of the audience and fully realised, here were all the wrinklies….mmmmm.

We had thought about having a drink and a meal to round off the evening but decided just on a drink, travelling back home to invite our daughter over for a take away pizza with some bubbly! A wonderful end to a brilliant day.

What were the flowers and who were they from? Beautiful cream roses with purple irises and some lilies in between from one of the boys, wasn’t that kind? Who loves ya baby!!!?

Is Spring starting to spring?

The south of UK was bathed in delightful sunshine with a slight breeze during Saturday. You could not sit indoors for long after all the cold we have had recently. It was gorgeous!

My husband and I decided to visit our favourite park to see if any real green shoots had emerged after the snow and ice we saw there on our last visit. Sure enough! The birds were singing, flitting here and there gathering food and just generally being full of the joys of a sunny day. Whilst we took a rest on one of the many benches provided, which can just be seen here, it was wonderful to be able to admire the view. So peaceful with the afternoon sun casting its warm glow across the tops of the trees.

As I said the bird song was amazing and so cheerful! Suddenly, I glanced down to my feet as I spotted some movement. Looking down I found I had a new friend! Mr Robin!!

I could not believe how tame he was. He was actually picking up crumbs at my feet. We both sat very still and only just moved enough for me to take these pictures!

Here he looked up to see what I was up to with my camera upon which, once he was satisfied that I would not stop him foraging, he then turned his back to me!

I was so excited to be able to have this wild bird moving so freely and closely to me. Obviously, the birds in this park are well used to people drifting in and out without minding too much.

Whilst we walked around we saw loads of clumps of snowdrops which is a sure sign that Spring is on its way!!!

Before we left we really wanted to stroll along the edges of some of the lakes which had been frozen over a few weeks ago.

What a difference a little sunshine makes!

Pancake Day – Get Ready!!!!

You must all have heard of Pancake Day or at the very least, Shrove Tuesday? This year it falls on Tuesday, 24 February so you just have time to check your stocks, get out the pancake pan and start tossing your pancakes!

The term ‘Shrove’ comes from the old word ‘shrive’ which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began.

Shroving is a ancient British custom in which children sang or recited poetry in exchange for food or money.
A popular shroving rhyme went like this:

Knock, knock, the pan's hot
And we are coming a-shroving
For a piece of pancake
Or a piece of bacon
Or a piece of truckle* cheese
Of your own making.

*Truckle cheese is barrel shaped and is often mature Cheddar.

Lent is a time of restraint or abstinence. Shrove Tuesday is the last day on which you can indulge yourself and need to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. Throughout the United Kingdom, and in many other countries, people indulge themselves on foods that traditionally aren't allowed during Lent. I believe in the US and French speaking states it is called Mardi Gras. Here some ladies from the mid 1950s enjoy the pancake race!

In the UK this coming Tuesday it is traditionally the day on which pancakes are made to be eaten, tossed or raced with in pancake races!

An English pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a frying pan. Caster sugar (superfine sugar) is sprinkled over the top and a dash of fresh lemon juice added. The pancake is then rolled. Some people put golden syrup or jam on their pancakes.

Pancake recipe: -

Ingredients
100 g (4 oz) plain flour
1 large egg
300 ml (1/2 pint) milk
Pinch of salt

Method
1. Sift the flour and pinch of salt into a mixing bowl and make a well in the middle. Break the egg into the well and whisk the egg so that it starts to incorporate the flour from around the bowl. Gradually add in the milk and continue to beat the mixture together until it is smooth.

2. Heat a little butter in a frying pan and pour about 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture into the pan. Tilt and move the pan until the mixture covers the base evenly. Cook on a medium heat for 30-60 seconds until golden. Flip the pancake and cook on the other side.

3. Keep the pancake warm and repeat with the remainder of the batter.

To serve

Sprinkle each pancake caster sugar and freshly squeezed lemon juice.

It was Shrove Tuesday and Mrs Williams was making pancakes for her sons, Justin 5, and Freddy 7.

As usual, the brothers began to argue over who should get the first pancake. Their mother saw a wonderful opportunity for a moral lesson.

'If Jesus were sitting at the table, He would say, "Let my brother have the first pancake".'

Quick as a flash Freddy turned to Justin and said, 'Justin, today you can be Jesus!'

A couple of posts ago I described a quiltie I had created for a swap group I belong to. Once I sat and thought about it, I looked hard again but decided that maybe I could do better!

So, I took some felt viscose from Sassalynne’s Shop on Etsy and used that as a base. Now taking various handmade papers I cut out rectangle shapes to place and sew. To finish I attached a vintage button from my MIL’s collection but placed some seed beads in its centre. For the reverse I simply took another piece of the felted viscose and zigzagged a border to keep it all together. And so, an Abstract Pink Rectangle Quiltie was born!

As its predecessor it measures 5” square. Hopefully this will look better than my Valentine quiltie. Regardless, it has now been posted so I had better stop trying to make my mind up and being so undecided!

Australia's Bush Fires

This is a disaster for any country and certainly one for Australia. My heart goes out to those who have lost their loved ones, homes where they have lived all their lives and to those who are suffering so much.

I won't dwell on too many words here but would ask that anyone reading this post follow the link above to bring themselves up to date.

A quiltie swap

Being part of a mixed fibre/textile group can be daunting! Well, for me anyway! I am still very much finding my feet and learning what to do with various textiles etc. So, I took the bull by the horns and decided to join in this month's challenge of creating a 5" quiltie under the title of Abstract.

Mindful that February also stands for Valentine I thought I would try to capture the feeling of romanticism by including some hearts.

I had some red felt left over from a previous project onto which I blanket stitched some hearts. Each heart was embellished with beads whilst the larger of the hearts had a lazy daisy stitch onto which I embroidered beads too! Then I had some pretty ribbon left over which I attached. Looking around my room I spotted a small gauze bag that had been used to hold the soap tablet in the washing machine. This was cut up to fit the quiltie. Now I had to add a little interest so decided on some glittery gold and purly snow flakes that I had used on some homemade cards! The look was completed with a blanket stitch around the quiltie and embellished with more white beads!

I always love to see what others have achieved or created and wonder at their expertise! Their creations always look so professional but I will continue to keep on and through trial and error will, one day, try to reach a better creation. Meanwhile, back to the drawing board! I might even experiment a little more and might be able to produce something better. We shall see!

Before the snow!

We knew the snow was coming and on this particular Saturday the sun was shining and the air was still crystal clear. What better excuse to get out and go for a walk in the countryside. Having looked at a map and various National Trust publications we decided to visit a place called Scotney Castle. Unfortunately, the house and gardens were closed for the winter and not due to open for a few weeks but the general public are still allowed to wander through the estate. This we did. It was wonderful! Walking in the fields you had to be careful where you placed your feet! Apart from that it really was lovely to be well wrapped up and able to enjoy the crisp frosty weather before the impending bad weather which heralded snow!

The sheep did not seem to mind us walking amongst them. They simply raised their heads, checked us out and resumed the serious business of eating!

I am told sheep actually prefer the dry, crisp frosty days rather than wet wintry ones because although their wool is waterproof I guess I wouldn't want to sit around in my wool coat on a wet day feeling soggy!

I must admit it was great to walk around without seeing any snow, just for a change!

Can you imagine choosing to take a walk around your estate if it looked like this? How the other half live!

Unto us a boy is born!

No, I know it is not Christmas but it does feel like it!!

Yesterday we celebrated the birth of our second grand child, a darling boy. A healthy 6lb 4oz baby who came into this world at 2pm. Mother and baby are doing fine!

The lyrics of the poem about the days were used to teach a child the order and names of the different days of the week. The theme of this poem ensured that a child would take a lively interest in which day that they were born on! The title, whether Thursdays Child or Mondays Child, is often forgotten. We only seem to have vague recollection of a poem about the attributes to being born on different days of the week.

Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

For this month's birthday the garnet stone is favoured. As a flower this day is honoured with the carnation.

Australia Day

On 26 January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip guided a fleet of 11 British ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales, effectively this was to be the founding of Australia. After many years of hardship and strife this new colony began to celebrate the anniversary of this date with great enthusiasm.

Australia, once known as New South Wales, was originally planned as a penal colony. In October 1786, the British government appointed Arthur Phillip captain of the HMS Sirius, and commissioned him to establish an agricultural work camp there for British convicts. Knowing very little about this far flung new land Phillip had great difficulty assembling the fleet that was to make the journey. His requests for experienced farmers to help set up the penal colony were repeatedly denied. As a result he set out for Australia with little funds and few resources. The crew of the ship were accompanied by a small contingent of Marines and other officers, Phillip led his 1,000-strong party, of whom more than 700 were convicts, around Africa to the eastern side of Australia. In all, the voyage lasted eight months, claiming the deaths of some 30 men.

The first years of settlement were extremely hard. With poor soil, an unfamiliar hostile climate and workers who were ignorant of farming, Phillip had great difficulty keeping the men alive. The colony was on the verge of outright starvation for several years, and the marines sent to keep order were not up to the task. Phillip, who proved to be a tough but fair-minded leader, persevered by appointing convicts to positions of responsibility and oversight. Floggings and hangings were commonplace, but so was egalitarianism. As Phillip said before leaving England: "In a new country there will be no slavery and hence no slaves."

Though Phillip returned to England in 1792, the colony did well and became prosperous by the turn of the 19th century. Feeling a new sense of patriotism, the men began to rally around January 26 as their founding day.

Finally, in 1818, January 26 became an official holiday, marking the 30th anniversary of British settlement in Australia. And, as Australia became a sovereign nation, it became the national holiday known as Australia Day. Today, Australia Day serves both as a day of celebration for the founding of the white British settlement, and as a day of mourning for the Aborigines who were slowly dispossessed of their land as white colonization spread across the continent. This being a fact that still has difficult implications.

So, early this morning, Australia woke up to start THE party! So many different events take place throughout the land. However, there is a more serious side too. On this great day in 2009, more than 13,000 new Australian citizens will make a public pledge of their commitment to Australia at citizenship ceremonies around the nation.

The Australian Flag Raising and Australian Citizenship Ceremony has become a flagship event in the nation's capital. Held on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, new citizens and guests watch the Australian flag raised on the Canadian flag pole, before reciting the Australian Citizenship Pledge: the last step in the process of becoming a citizen.

New citizens are then presented with their certificate of Australian citizenship by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP.

A very auspicious day!

You can't help but feel the electric excitement that is not only engulfing America but the world too! Today will be one of those days which we will all remember. Today, the 44th President of America is to be sworn in. That in itself is important. However, more importantly, this is the first time that a black American has had the opportunity to enter the White House. I remember, not too long ago, all the demonstrations we followed on the news about the troubles in America. To think that a few years down the road the picture has changed. There will be many who are still alive and remember the dark days. Today, there is enlightenment for all of us, not just America! A new hope and a new adventure.

There will be many problems inherited and many more to solve but with resolution, integrity and a new hope these will be overcome in one way or another.

Jack Frost and his grip!

As many of you know from my precious posts, my husband and I love to go for walks in National Trust properties. Our favourite is Sheffield Park where we have spent many a delightful hour strolling around at different times of the year to view the plant life, birds and lakes in all their glory. Each season is different and each visit within that season shows up another treasure.

This weekend Jack Frost was paying many of us a visit but as the freezing fog lifted we were able to see the branches of the trees outlined with white crystal ice. The picture was beautiful! Unlike when snow nestles in the crooks and crannies of branches the ice gave a very surreal and delicate look. This was first seen as we drove through Ashdown Forest which was originally a deer hunting forest in Norman times! It is a great place for walking and enjoying spectacular views over the Sussex countryside and is known the world over as the 'home' of Winnie the Pooh.

So, we stopped the car to park up so that yours truly could take a couple of photos such as these: Although they were taken in colour they give the impression of black and white.... well nearly!

This has to be one of my favourites to illustrate how the branches of the trees were caught up in the ice age. Banks of trees laden with ice whilst the close up picture shows how delicately the branches appeared.

Now it was time to move on to Sheffield Park. Normally awash with colour throughout the year there was still plenty of contrast. Here we look down the series of ponds to the main lake. The main difference between here and Ashdown was that the ice on the trees had mostly melted. However, the water in all the lakes in the park remained iced over with different amounts of ice.

The swans and ducks were restricted in their feeding areas to a small patch where visitors to the park could come to feed crusts of bread.

I mentioned the contrasts you could see. Well, have a look at these palm trees standing frozen by the lake. Normally seen in desert this certainly proved a different type of desert; one of ice!

Meanwhile I couldn't resist taking this photograph of icicles formed at the edge of a weir that fed the lakes.

Here is another view of a waterfall that has been stopped in its tracks!

And so, having taken loads of photographs and walked around taking in all the beautiful sights we decided we would welcome the car ride home and that all important hot cup of tea!

It was really cold!

In order to blow the cobwebs my husband and I decided to visit Wakehurst Place which is not too far a drive from our house. It was just a couple of days into the new year and the weather, though dry, was really cold!

One of the views we had promised ourselves was that of a huge tree near the main house which had been decorated with loads of light bulbs which were to be lit every afternoon just prior to the closing of the park. We got there around 3.30pm to walk around a little whilst waiting for the lights to be switched on. Boy, was it cold! It was OK at first as we were well wrapped up and the sun was still throwing its last rays on the house and surrounding areas. Amazingly, there were still a number of visitors walking about looking like us, waiting for the lights to be switched on! Here you can see a view of the front of the house from across a lake with about three quarters of an inch of ice.

Even the birds were finding it hard work. At one stage we saw some seagulls fighting over some bread that had been cast on the ice only to be slithering all over the place!

Ducks and moorhens were trying to manoeuvre across the ice to reach the bread that visitors had thrown for them. If you look closely here this moorhen has found a large crust!

All this was all very well but when were the lights going to be lit?

Here the sun was shining on this tree and creating a lovely pink colour accentuating the branches towards the top of the tree.

Finally!! The lights were switched on! It was hard to photograph since the sky still held the last of the daylight. Still, you could see vestiges of the moon to the upper right and judging by the clear blue sky with not a cloud in sight we were due for a very cold night.

Best to return to the car to put the heater on and whilst driving home we looked forward to a hot cup of tea and the remainders of the Christmas cake to warm us up!

Yes, it's that time of year when you can follow the party around the world. By now New Zealand and Australia have already celebrated and as the hours pass by another country celebrates. Other countries such as India have celebrated less opulently due to security issues. The leader of Dubai in the Middle East has cancelled all outdoor festivities due to the Middle East conflict in Gaza.

London is waiting patiently. The temperature is set to slip to a cold and very frosty night but the bright colours of the fireworks planned by London Eye will help overcome the chill of the night. Of course one of the most famous part of the world regarding Hogmanay will be Edinburgh in Scotland where 100,0oo revellers are expected to turn out in sub zero temperatures.

2009 awaits us all! With sadness we leave 2008 with all we experienced whilst with nervousness and excitement we look forward to 2009. What will next year bring us all?

A wonderful original painting by Sixsisters entitled Joy! "Their joy is apparent as they move across the floor. Time stands still for a few moments as we look at them and feel the music and the lightness of their steps. This is the perfect painting for anyone who appreciates dance or the love of it." I expect a few of us will be dancing the night away, or wish we did/could! However you see the New Year in, let it be joyful and fun - even if the zzzzzz are being pushed up!

Oh no, he didn't! Or, Oh yes, he did!! These are words that ring out from both children and adults alike during the many Pantomime performances at this time of year in UK. No, we haven't all gone mad. Never heard of a Panto or Pantomime? Well, this could be your lucky day!!

Pantomime, as we know it today is a theatrical show predominantly aimed at children, based on a popular fairy tale or folk legend. The most popular subjects being "Cinderella", followed by "Aladdin", "Dick Whittington" and "Snow White". Although any story linked with a fairy tale or traditional children's story such as Peter Pan, Jack and the Beanstalk etc can be used.

In the UK, the word "Pantomime" means a form of entertainment, generally performed during the Christmas season during the months of December and January. Most cities and towns throughout the UK have a form of Pantomime. The origins of British Pantomime or "Panto" as it is known date back to the middle ages, taking on board the traditions of the Italian "Commedia dell’ Arte, the Italian night scenes in which actors concentrated on miming along with song and dance, and British Music hall to produce an intrinsic art form that constantly adapted to survive up to the present day. Panto has been attempted abroad, usually with a small amount of success. Not surprisingly it has proved popular in countries such as Canada, Australia. However, in America this very British art form has been less popular, although in 1868 a production of "Humpty Dumpty" ran for over 1,200 performances at the Olympic Theatre, New York, making it the most successful Pantomime in American history!

Pantomime has always combined many elements of theatre throughout its existence. By adapting itself it has managed to survive. The main element includes the most important one of tradition with a strong well known story line. The tale has to be well told, incorporating the all important elements of good battling against evil, and emerging triumphant. In this respect, the concept varies little from the medieval morality plays, performed on village greens. To this day "tradition" says that the Pantomime villain should be the first to enter, from the "dark side", stage left, followed by his adversary the good fairy from stage right. This echoes the tradition in medieval times when the entrances to heaven and hell were placed on these sides. The evil character is booed and hissed at as he enters. Whenever he asks the audience whether something is true or not they will always respond in the opposite. Hence the 'oh yes, you did' versus the 'oh no, you didn't' tradition.

Another important element of a good Panto is the slap stick humour. This could be derived from the original Harlequin character who would know when the scenery should be changed, and it is believed he would "Clap" his slapstick to indicate that this should happen, in the form of an audible cue. It could well be the start of the old superstition that it was bad luck to clap your hands behind the scenes at the back of the stage for fear that the heavy scenery would be moved at an inappropriate time thus causing an accident.

One of the main characters in a Panto is the Pantomime Dame, usually the hero’s mother, such as Widow Twankey in "Aladdin" or "Dame Trott" in Jack and the Beanstalk. She was a creation that emerged from the early Music Halls of the Victorian era.

The Ugly Sisters differ from the Dame in that they have to tread the thin tightrope between being hugely comic characters, and yet still remain the villains of the piece. They were originally played by women but from the mid 1800 men took on the characters.

Tradition also states that the principal boy role should be played by a woman and not a man. The Victorian male, living in a society where even the legs of the parlour piano were covered for modesty’s sake , craved the vision of a well turned calf, or shapely ankle.

Whilst ladies were corseted, crinolined or bustled on the street, artistic license allowed ladies upon the stage to wear costumes that revealed shapely legs in tights on condition that they were playing a male role!

Seldom featured, and yet indispensable, Pantomime could not survive without its chorus of dancers, and indeed its troupes of juveniles or “Babes” as they are known. Today, for reasons of economy the troupe will consist of 6 -8 boys and girls.

In addition to the usual characters on stage modern technology in the form of computer graphics has been used to be incorporated in the performances to enhance lighting effects and sounds to help keep the show as modern and up to date as possible.

And so, my friends, you have a very brief recount of the traditional British Panto! For many years to come it will remain as the traditional activity for the Christmas period. A visit to a pantomime may be a child’s first experience of live theatre. If that experience is magical enough, it can leave a lasting impression. In a world where children are surrounded by computer games and videos, DVD's and the all pervasive influences of television, a visit to a pantomime could be a catalyst.

The tradition will continue, children will shout "Oh yes it is!" as loudly as ever, and, when the actor in the white sheet waves his arms behind our hero and goes "Whoo" Whooo!", children of all ages will still cry out "Its-behind-you!"

Without further ado, I would like to thank all my readers for joining me in my various escapades during the year, the highs and lows!

The parcels/presents are all wrapped and sitting invitingly under the tree... no feeling them to guess what is inside! The shopping has been completed apart from the few last minute items. The food is being prepared and readied for cooking on the big day. Light up the lights, pull a cracker or two and share a 'not so funny' joke with a funny hat on whilst you try to play with plastic toy from the cracker. Don't you love tradition?

So it just leaves me the important job to wish you all the merriest of Christmases. May your cup be overflowing, as they say! Some of you will be experiencing a white Christmas (and how!) whilst the rest of us in parts of UK will be enjoying a cool, damp day. Where ever you are, may your Christmas be peaceful, share with family and friends bringing you fond memories to relish over the years to come.

Christmas lights

One of the things we love to do just before Christmas is to take a walk in our neighbourhood to 'inspect' all the Christmas lights that folk have put up on their houses, in the garden etc. We did notice that this year, possibly due to families with small children moving on or a change in circumstances, was that there appeared to be less lights around. A shame really as it always evokes some of the magical feeling of Christmas, doesn't it?

We have always been pretty conservative with our decorations, even when the kids were young. Here is a picture I took the other evening from across the street of our abode. The light on the side of the house is actually a street light and not part of the decorations!

The window to the left is my workroom.

We have a couple of small windows at the side of the house and always place a flickering light in them to make it more cosy looking.

I think you can just make out the Christmas tree in our front room which we placed in the bay of the window.

In case I don't have a chance again, I just want to wish you all a wonderful Christmas! Don't forget it will be a time to make that ultimate sacrifice of helping to eating all the food, including the chocolates! You know your assistance will be rewarded, somehow, somewhere!!!!!!

I haven't actually been creating or making anything for any of my shops because this is the time of year to be busy with preparations for the BIG day!!! Someone told me that this time next week it would be just a distant memory...but think of all the giving and eating to be done in the mean time!!!!

Just today trying out a new recipe for little mince cakes, that's right cakes, not mince pies. Sounded like fun!

Here is a picture of them just out of the oven.....
A sponge type mixture of which one spoonful was placed in first, then a spoonful of mincemeat (the sweet stuff!) followed by another spoonful of the cake mixture. 18 minutes later... Voila!!!

Christmas, a time to remember!

Christmastime is a time to cast your mind back to childhood memories that make Christmas for you today.

Some of my earlier childhood was spent in the Far East. Java, to be precise. My most vivid memories are of an enormous real Christmas tree that reached right up to the ceiling. Bearing in mind that houses were built with high ceilings for coolness in the heat of the day. As was the usual custom, we had servants. My poor mother did not know quite what hit her when we arrived in the western hemisphere and she had to do her own housework! We used to have a maid for the laundry and general cleaning, one acted as cook and there was a gardener along with a driver who took my Dad to his office and back every day. Life was good!

Anyway, my parents used to entertain a lot but I do remember that we used to celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. This gave a magical sense to the whole event with all the candles and lights shining brightly. Loads of presents were placed under the tree including presents for each of the servants and their families. It was always the custom for them to come in and be given their presents before we sat down to our Christmas evening meal. And, guess what? I was allowed a little taste of red wine with lots of water added. Oh, how the colour would sparkle as I showed my wine glass to the candle light!

Christmas in Guernsey, Channel Islands which is where I spent the rest of my childhood, was very different. Here my parents decided latterly to celebrate on Christmas Day with lunch. The magical atmosphere did not seem to be prevalent then unless my earlier childhood memories were becoming clouded.

There was one custom which I remember from Java and Guernsey. This was the custom my canny Scots father instigated! That of saving Christmas wrapping paper! Since my parents were strong believers that the festival was a close family one only (and so, there were three of us since I was an only child!) it was easier to continue with the habit of saving the wrapping paper. We had an old brown beaten up leather suitcase which had seen far better days. Inside were carefully folded pieces of Christmas wrapping paper of all sizes and styles. Many tags as well which had all been written years before, Mummy, Daddy, Patricia. Since we always had a real tree the pine needles would find their way into the case and therefore the contents always had a wonderful pine smell about them. To this day, Christmas means pine trees in my mind's eye!

The first time I spent any time outside of the home and watched as people we had given presents opening up theirs was to be a hard lesson to be learnt. They all would rip off the paper! Didn't they think to carefully remove the sticky tape and then fold the paper in the creases that had been created so long ago? This is what we always did!!! To this day, I still feel guilty if I rip or tear the paper as I try to open the present carefully whether I save the paper or not!

Now it is my turn to recreate a family Christmas. We ,too, decided that Christmas dinner should be just for our family. However, with 4 children it was a lot noisier and more fun! For many years we had our routine of trying to sleep through the noise of the children waking early, excitedly opening up the presents in their sacks. My husband sometimes worked shift work during these years and so often he would not be home until early afternoon. I would allow a couple of the smaller presents to be opened with the main ones waiting for when we were all together before dishing up the meal. Evenings were always spent playing with the new found presents.

Today, the children and their respective partners have their own commitments in that they spend alternate Christmases with their various 'in laws'. Bucks Fizz (champagne and orange) is always the starting signal of Christmas morning whether my husband and I are on our own or not. Later others arrive and we go through the ritual opening of presents, the meal, the playing with presents before we all go home to our various homes.

One day, they will all have families and want to spend Christmas in their homes. I wonder what their childhood memories will be of their Christmases?

The last of my ramblings in Spain!

Yes, I promise this is the last post which will refer to our visit to Mijas on the Costa del Sol, Spain. I just feel that we saw so many interesting things that I love to share!

Walking around this wonderful town with its white washed houses we came across some fountains which on a hot scorching summer's day would provide cool relief.

As luck would have it, the fountains diminished just as I clicked the camera! However, I had better luck this time!

Nearby we discovered the town's bull ring which proved to be the oldest in Spain. Originally bull rings were built in an oval and this one is supposed to replicate this. It was opened in 1900 and is still used for bull fights and horse events. I did not bother going to the bull fight which took place during our stay!

You could go into the ring on a fighting day to see the museum but I decided not to, perhaps silly, but I do not feel comfortable with the whole bull fighting scenario. At least we were told they did not go for the kill here as the ring was too small. Still, I am sure you will forgive me for not divulging too much about this 'sport' which is really not my cup of tea.

Whilst strolling around I did manage to take some pictures of the typical white washed houses. This was harder than envisaged because I was desperately trying to make sure there were no cars around!

Especially, on a lazy Sunday afternoon you might see some of the older inhabitants taking a stroll dressed in their Sunday best as they stop to catch up on their local news. Siesta time really does kick in every day around 2pm until between 4 and 5 pm. After lunch everyone is home resting, especially during the hot summers when it really is too hot to venture out. However, note the autumnal colours which I caught as I walked down this main thoroughfare. I love the quaint street lights which give a wonderfully rustic setting!

Before I leave this, to me, fascinating subject of travels in Spain I would love to share some pictures of a marina near Torremolinos which is a large town on the Andalucian coast. Here the normal tourists mingle together with others... how the other half live! Some of the boats we saw were just amazing. Imagine living in one of the flats (sorry, apartments!) overlooking this marina. There were many deep sea fishing boats waiting to be hired. Many boats simply tied up at the end of the season or waiting for their owners to return at the weekend to play!

Whilst we were walking around the inevitable tourist shops selling all the usual junk we noticed some people throwing odd bits of bread into the water. There were even some enterprising kiosks selling stale bread for feeding the fish! So, I did have to go and have a look to see what fish were being fed, didn't I?

Goodness knows what type of fish they were? The only thing about them I did notice was that they were prolific! Whenever someone threw in some bread they appeared as if by magic from everywhere to descend on that one spot to fight over a piece of stale bread! An amazing sight.

And so my friends, I will now leave you with one last picture of a beautiful flower which I spotted in the public gardens of Mijas. They were so pretty that I just couldn't resist taking a picture of them. I am not sure of the name although they look similar to Periwinkles.

I hope you have enjoyed coming with me to revisit our trip during which we had a wonderfully relaxing time as well as seeing some fascinating sights and meeting a very friendly crowd of local people to Mijas Pueblo.

December Quiltie

A group I belong to are having a quiltie swap this month. Now a quiltie is a mini quilt measuring a square 5". This could be framed or hung up on its own or simply placed in an album.

The theme for this month was A Winter Wonderland. I decided it was far too cold to see outside so decided to stay indoors and peek through the kitchen windows with their red gingham curtains.

I hope my swap partner likes it!!!

Well, I have gone and done it!!! As promised a few posts ago I have jumped in a new direction to bring my love of encaustics to a wider audience! Instead of saving up to buy individual paintings why not buy a book which includes illustrations and descriptions of some of my paintings?

A Spanish Folk Museum

I told you I would ramble on about our Spanish holiday! Well, one day as we were walking round the delightful village of Mijas on the Costa del Sol we came upon a door opening near the centre of the village where we discovered a Spanish folk museum. First of all we gingerly entered looking for the ticket seller but entry was absolutely free and so we started on our exploration of a typical old Spanish home and how village inhabitants lived in some of these remote areas.

Each room that you came into had been laid out with original, authentic pieces of furniture to show how families would live. Here you can see the corner of the room which has been set aside for sewing - well I had to include that didn't I?

One of the bedrooms had the main bed made up whilst a wooden crib lay alongside.

Although the main family room had a dining table and chairs there was still space for another sewing machine! Note the family pictures that adorned the white washed walls of the house.

Walking round the house we were stepping upstairs to find this bedroom. Very cleverly presented since the viewer is actually looking through a pane of glass mounted in the back of a wardrobe. So, you can't really enter the room but feel part of it!

Summers are incredibly hot in this part of Spain but as you climb the external steps to another part of the house you look down into the internal courtyard onto which all the rooms open. Note the wonderful plants which give you a sense of coolness.

In another area of the house there was a display showing how bees were kept. You can see in the picture below the tools and equipment used to protect from and manage the bees. Pictures hung around showing all the different crafts that the women and men were involved in such as this lady who was basket weaving. As we entered another area of the building we came upon the part of the museum which held a display of 3D pictures made of clay depicting life in and around the village such as the blindfolded donkey walking round and round as the flour was being milled.

See the olive gatherers in this 3D image. The area had a profusion of olive trees with looked wonderful with their old, dark knarled tree trunks which were a sure indication of their age.

In this picture someone is depicted doing the mending which in past days would have been an ongoing job, every day!

In a way it was a shame that everything had Spanish labels making it difficult for the visitor (there were many from different countries) to fully understand the descriptions. However, it did make the museum feel that more authentic and less commercialised.
